Re-elect Linda Higgins to the Minnesota Senate!

Senator Higgins has a proven record as an effective advocate on behalf of our district. As a resident of the north side of Minneapolis for almost 30 years, she cares deeply for her constituents. In her ten years in the Minnesota Senate, she has worked hard to do the right and to make a difference, not only for the residents in District 58, but for all Minnesotans.

She has successfully carried bills that increased funding for:

  • basic sliding-fee childcare
  • after-school enrichment
  • adolescent parenting
  • smaller class sizes

Senator Higgins has fought for

  • affordable healthcare
  • clean air and water
  • safer neighborhoods

She has been a leader on the Elections Committee and has tried to ensure that everyone who is entitled to vote has the opportunity to do so. She even cast the deciding vote to KILL THE BILL in the Senate Elections Committee that would have required a birth certificate or passport to register to vote.

She has also passed bills that protect Minnesotans. Some of these bills protect innocent people from mortgage flipping scams and foreclosures.  One that is coming to the floor soon will prevent lead poisoning by regulating and banning jewelry that contains lead from being sold for use by children under age 12. Another bill stops the board of cosmetology from withholding licenses to women who get their cosmetology schooling in our state prison system, allowing these women to support their families.

She is also an environmentalist. Senator Higgins carried the first-in-the-nation bill to prohibit lawn fertilizer containing phosphorus. Through her efforts, there is money in the bonding bill to start replacing the tens of thousands of shade trees we’ve lost to dutch elm disease. And she is hopeful that her electronic-waste recycling bill will pass this year!

Senator Higgins aims to empower kids to make good choices about their lives. Earlier this year, she got 2.5 million dollars for summer jobs for Minneapolis youth in the Senate’s Jobs bill. Keeping teenagers busy and off the streets is one piece of the crime prevention puzzle. Minneapolis senators are trying to get more local government aid for our city; like you, they see the frightening increase in violent crime and homicides and want to help our city hire more cops too. But they also know that along with more police, they need early childhood education, affordable childcare, world-class schools, better graduation rates, and jobs, jobs, jobs.

Senator Higgins has brought home millions of dollars for projects for our senate district:

  • The Planetarium atop the new downtown library
  • Heritage Park
  • Humboldt Greenway
  • The new bridge being built on Plymouth Avenue near Theodore Wirth Park
  • Bassett’s Creek Trail
  • The Minneapolis Urban League’s Glover-Sudduth Center
  • Minneapolis Community and Technical College’s library
  • St. Anthony Falls Mill City Museum

And in 2006’s bonding bill, there are 20 million dollars in projects for our district – Lowry Avenue, Lowry bridge reconstruction, the Schubert Theater, and McPhail Center for the Performing Arts (which is moving to our district).

Senator Higgins asks for your vote on Election Day. Together, we can all continue working for a better district, a better city, a better state, and a better world!
